He is much more free-flowing as he flies around and through walls. The main gameplay switches between Jodie and Aiden, who controls differently. There is light combat as well, but in these cases, the action slows down and the player has to flick the controller sticks in a specific direction, often at the enemies. Known to gamers as “quick time events,” often all you need to do is move the right stick or touch a button to trigger the next scene in the game. As in Quantic Dream’s previous game, Heavy Rain, onscreen items that you can interact with are marked with a white dot, and you are always told what button to push. Unlike in, say, the Grand Theft Auto series, where your characters are free to wander, much of the world of Beyond cannot be explored. Beyond is very much a guided experience, and could be described as being a sophisticated interactive movie. It is these action sequences that may disappoint serious players, mostly due to the game’s simple control scheme, compared to conventional action games. These more closely tread traditional video game territory, with secret agent missions in far-flung lands and some ghost busting. She is also recruited by the CIA for her special abilities, which lead to some action-oriented sequences. Another aspect that adds depth is her search for Aiden’s tie to her and sorting out her family history. It is the mundane sequences from her life that set Beyond apart from other games, such as Jodie playing as a child or cleaning up her apartment for a date, which make her a relatable character. The game tells her story in a non-linear manner, jumping around to episodes during Jodie’s life from a young child on up to a woman in her 20s, as Aiden alternately torments and, more often, protects her.
